Resources for Patients in Underserved Areas

Finding care can be challenging if you live in one of Virginia's many underserved areas -- communities in which there is a shortage of medical, dental or mental health care providers.

Through grants, initiatives and partnerships, the Virginia Health Care Foundation is dedicated to increasing access to care statewide and strengthening

the Commonwealth's health safety net.

Depending on where you live and, in some cases, your income and insurance status, the resources below may be able to help you receive the care you need:

Community Health Centers are located in areas of Virginia that do not have enough providers (underserved areas).  They provide primary care to anyone regardless of income or insurance, typically on a sliding fee schedule. (Find a Community Health Center near you.)
Free Clinics are available to those living in more than 100 cities and counties across Virginia.  While Free Clinics are usually established to assist low-income, uninsured individuals, they also can be invaluable health resources in underserved areas.  (Find a Free Clinic near you.)
The Virginia Department of Health offers health services, to varying degrees, at health district offices statewide.  (Find a Virginia Health Department location near you).
Finding Dental Care can be a challenge if you live in an underserved area, particularly if you don't have dental coverage.  (Find a Dental Safety Net dentist near you.)

Smiles for Children, the Virginia Medicaid dental plan, is

adding new dentists every day.  (Find a Smiles for

    Children dentist near you.)

The VCU School of Dentistry dental clinic is one

resource for Virginians from across the state seeking

     lower cost dental care.

Free or low cost prescription medications are available to eligible Virginians with chronic illnesses.  RxRelief Virginia helps link qualified patients with the medicines they need through locations statewide. (Find an RxRelief Virginia site near you.)
