About the Virginia Health Care Foundation

Virginia Health Care Foundation The Virginia Health Care Foundation is one of the key elements of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s strategy to buttress local primary care delivery systems and strengthen the health safety net.

VHCF was initiated in 1992 by the Virginia General Assembly and its Joint Commission on Health Care to promote and fund innovative public-private partnerships that increase access to primary care for Virginia's uninsured and medically underserved.

As a public/private partnership, VHCF combines the flexibility and nimble nature of the private sector with the resources and institutional wherewithal of the public sector.

Operating with an entrepreneurial spirit, VHCF works on multiple fronts to increase access to care for Virginia’s uninsured and medically underserved. In addition to grantmaking to support community-based projects, VHCF has initiated several important statewide programs, including:

The Pharmacy Connection – which increases access to prescription medication for seniors and chronically ill adults;
The Children's Health Insurance Initiative – which enrolls eligible children in health insurance through Virginia’s FAMIS programs;
The Healthy Communities Loan Fund - which brings more providers to parts of the state where there are too few; and

SeniorNavigator – which serves as a source of information and referral for seniors and their caregivers.

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in the 15 years since VHCF was established. We’ve helped hundreds of thousands of uninsured and medically underserved Virginians obtain the care they need. Many challenges remain, however, and VHCF stands ready to tackle them by continuing to build and foster partnerships, solidify proven initiatives and launch new endeavors.

Fifteen years ago it was just an idea. Today VHCF is helping uninsured Virginians in every part of the Commonwealth.

Since 1992, VHCF's partnerships and programs have:

- Obtained $500 million in free medications for 145,000 uninsured Virginians;

- Enrolled more than 40,000 eligible children in the state's child health insurance programs (FAMIS);

- Provided more than 1.6 million patient visits; and

- Leveraged an average of $11 in cash, health services, and other in-kind contributions for each dollar expended.

We could not have accomplished this much without the support of Virginia's General Assembly and our many private partners.  Please join us as we continue to give Virginia's uninsured somewhere to turn!
